Paul at the Areopagus

Series: Book of Acts

In Acts 17 Paul presents a clear and logical explanation of the Gospel to the Epicurean
and Stoic philosophers in Athens, the birthplace of Platonic philosophy. First, he
explains that the God he is proclaiming is the Creator, the one who brought forth the
entire universe, not secondary deities like those of the Greco/Roman pantheon. He then
explains that we owe our existence to this God and that we are all His offspring. He then
explains that this God does not live in temples and has no need for humans to care for
them as the pagan idols do. Paul then explains that because humanity has been in error
concerning the nature of divinity there is a coming day of judgment. The remedy is
repentance and to establish a relationship with the coming judge.
